Prepare for the Ethos call
Ethos's AI interviewer asks about your Equity Research Analyst background. These are our own practice questions for that work, not Ethos's.
How do you decide which valuation methods to lean on for a given company, and how do you reconcile them when they disagree?
I match the method to how the company makes money: discounted cash flow for a business with predictable cash generation, multiples for one in a clear peer group, and a sum of the parts when segments have different economics. When the methods disagree by a wide margin I treat that as a finding about which assumptions the market prices differently from me, rather than a problem to average away.
What is your process for building a three-statement model that stays usable after four quarters of updates?
I keep every driver assumption on one input sheet, with historical and forecast columns in the same layout, so each quarterly update means entering the latest actuals and reviewing drivers rather than rewiring formulas. I also build in checks that flag when the balance sheet stops balancing, because errors that go unnoticed for two quarters are expensive to find later.
How do you form a view on an industry's structure before you start modeling individual companies in it?
I look at where the pricing power sits along the value chain, how concentrated the customers and suppliers are, and what the cost curve looks like across producers. That tells me which companies can hold margins in a downturn, which is usually more important to the call than growth rates, and it keeps me from building a model where every player wins share at once.
How do you separate what management says on an earnings call from what the numbers in the filing support?
I read the filing before the call and write down the two or three questions the numbers raise, then listen for whether management addresses them unprompted. I pay close attention to changes in how metrics are defined or which ones are no longer disclosed, since companies tend to stop reporting a figure the quarter before it turns ugly.

Common questions
How and when does Ethos pay experts?
Within 30 days of your invoice, after a project closes. Some AI training platforms pay weekly, so plan for the longer wait.
Is Ethos regular AI training work like rating chatbot responses?
No. Ethos is an expert network. AI labs, investment funds and large companies pay for your domain knowledge (deal analysis, clinical reasoning, legal logic, financial modeling) in three formats: multi-week consulting engagements, 30 to 60 minute advisory calls, and research surveys. Listings like this one are the AI-lab engagements, where you write or review expert material for a model.
How many hours a week is this Head of Equity Research work?
Between 5 and 20 hours a week. At $100/hr that is $500 to $2,000 a week. You set your own hours.
What experience does this Head of Equity Research listing ask for?
The listing asks for 3+ years in equity research at a recognized sell-side or independent firm; deep expertise in valuation exhibits, industry analysis, and investment thesis communication; and expert-level PowerPoint and slide craftsmanship, with excellent written communication and attention to detail. Ethos's interviewer builds your profile from your CV, so have the roles that show this ready to talk through.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $100/hr, an hourly rate. Pay can change after we check the listing, so confirm the rate on the platform's application page.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?
The link opens Ethos's sign-up. There is no form for this listing: Ethos's AI interviewer asks about your career in a 5 to 15 minute call, builds your profile from it, and then matches you to projects like this one. Keep your CV open and cover the experience the Qualifications above ask for.
Who built Ethos and is it legitimate?
Yes. Ethos was founded in London in 2024 by James Lo (McKinsey, SoftBank Vision Fund) and Daniel Mankowitz (Google DeepMind research scientist and lead author of AlphaDev). It raised a $22.75M Series A led by a16z in May 2026, with General Catalyst and XTX Markets participating, and works with AI labs, private equity firms, hedge funds and consultancies. The link on this page is an affiliate link; it doesn't affect your pay or the projects you're offered.
Ethos is an expert network backed by Andreessen Horowitz that uses an AI voice interview to learn about your experience and then matches you with paid opportunities, including AI training and evaluation projects.
