Prepare for the Ethos call
Ethos's AI interviewer asks about your Venture Capital Associate background. These are our own practice questions for that work, not Ethos's.
How do you build a sourcing process that surfaces companies before they show up in every other investor's inbox?
I pick two or three themes the fund has a view on and build relationships with the people who see those companies early: operators who have left to start something, technical hiring managers, and founders we passed on. Inbound deal flow is mostly companies that have already been shopped, so I measure myself on how many first meetings came from my own network rather than from a forward.
What does your first-pass screen look like when you have 40 new companies in the pipeline and time for 5 calls?
I check three things before anything else: whether the founder has a credible reason to be the one solving this problem, whether the market can support a venture-scale outcome, and whether the stage and check size fit the fund. Anything that fails one of those gets a polite pass within a day, which keeps the pipeline honest and protects the founder's time as much as mine.
How do you approach customer reference calls during diligence so you learn something the founder's deck did not tell you?
I ask the founder for references but also find two or three customers on my own, since the curated ones are chosen to be happy. On the call I spend most of the time on how they bought, what they compared it against, and what would make them churn, because the answer to the last question tells me more about defensibility than any retention chart.
Walk me through how you would size a market from the bottom up when there is no published figure for the category.
I count the number of plausible buyers using a proxy I can defend, such as firms over a certain headcount in the target industries, then multiply by a realistic annual contract value drawn from the company's own early deals. I show the assumptions in a table so a partner can disagree with one input without rejecting the whole estimate, and I cross-check against any top-down figure that exists.

Is Ethos regular AI training work like rating chatbot responses?
No. Ethos is an expert network. AI labs, investment funds and large companies pay for your domain knowledge (deal analysis, clinical reasoning, legal logic, financial modeling) in three formats: multi-week consulting engagements, 30 to 60 minute advisory calls, and research surveys. Listings like this one are the AI-lab engagements, where you write or review expert material for a model.
Do I need to keep applying for projects on Ethos?
No. When your profile is live, Ethos matches you to new projects from your career history, so companies find you. Each finished project raises your Expert Score, which brings you better-paid work.
How many hours a week is this Investment Manager, Venture Capital work?
Between 5 and 20 hours a week. At $100/hr that is $500 to $2,000 a week. You set your own hours.

The listing asks for 3+ years in an investing role at a venture capital or growth equity fund; experience producing IC memos, market maps, and LP materials; and expert-level PowerPoint and slide craftsmanship, with excellent written communication and attention to detail. Ethos's interviewer builds your profile from your CV, so have the roles that show this ready to talk through.
