Prepare for the Ethos call
Ethos's AI interviewer asks about your Market Research Analyst background. These are our own practice questions for that work, not Ethos's.
How do you turn a vague business question into a study design with a sample, method and set of measures you can defend?
I write down the decision the research will inform and the answer that would change it, then work backward to the smallest study that could produce that answer. That usually settles whether I need a survey, interviews, or both, and it gives me a sample size target based on the difference I need to detect rather than on a round number.
What checks do you run on a questionnaire before it goes into the field to catch questions that will produce misleading data?
I pilot it with a handful of respondents and ask them to think aloud, which catches double-barreled questions, leading wording, and scale labels that people read differently than I intended. I also review the order of questions, since asking about satisfaction right after a list of problems reliably pulls the scores down.
How do you decide when a survey result is strong enough to report as a finding versus noise in the sample?
I look at the size of the difference against the margin of error for that subgroup, and I check whether the pattern holds across related questions rather than appearing in one item alone. A difference that is significant but tiny gets reported with that caveat, and a large one in a small subgroup gets flagged as directional so nobody builds a plan on it.
How do you analyze a set of 20 interview transcripts so the themes you report are more than the quotes you remember best?
I code each transcript against a short framework I set before reading, then add new codes as they come up and go back to recode the earlier transcripts. Counting how many participants raised each theme, not how often it was mentioned, keeps one talkative interviewee from dominating the findings, and I pick quotes after the counts rather than before.

Common questions
Is Ethos regular AI training work like rating chatbot responses?
No. Ethos is an expert network. AI labs, investment funds and large companies pay for your domain knowledge (deal analysis, clinical reasoning, legal logic, financial modeling) in three formats: multi-week consulting engagements, 30 to 60 minute advisory calls, and research surveys. Listings like this one are the AI-lab engagements, where you write or review expert material for a model.
Do I need to keep applying for projects on Ethos?
No. When your profile is live, Ethos matches you to new projects from your career history, so companies find you. Each finished project raises your Expert Score, which brings you better-paid work.
How many hours a week is this Director of Market Research work?
Between 5 and 20 hours a week. At $70/hr that is $350 to $1,400 a week. You set your own hours.
What experience does this Director of Market Research listing ask for?
The listing asks for 4+ years conducting market research, competitive intelligence, or industry benchmarking analysis in an agency, consulting, or in-house strategy role; direct experience building market sizing models, competitor battlecards, or pricing comparison matrices used to inform go-to-market or product decisions; and expert-level document, spreadsheet, and slide craftsmanship, with excellent written communication and attention to detail. Ethos's interviewer builds your profile from your CV, so have the roles that show this ready to talk through.
How much does this specific role pay?
This listing is posted at $70/hr, an hourly rate. Pay can change after we check the listing, so confirm the rate on the platform's application page.
What happens when I click Apply on this listing?

Who built Ethos and is it legitimate?
Yes. Ethos was founded in London in 2024 by James Lo (McKinsey, SoftBank Vision Fund) and Daniel Mankowitz (Google DeepMind research scientist and lead author of AlphaDev). It raised a $22.75M Series A led by a16z in May 2026, with General Catalyst and XTX Markets participating, and works with AI labs, private equity firms, hedge funds and consultancies. The link on this page is an affiliate link; it doesn't affect your pay or the projects you're offered.
Ethos is an expert network backed by Andreessen Horowitz that uses an AI voice interview to learn about your experience and then matches you with paid opportunities, including AI training and evaluation projects.
